And the last place I lived, my landlady was WOKE and took her spiritual practices very seriously.

It means the presence of spirits. I used alkaline water and there were no bubbles when I lit the candle. I chanted and prayed to the divine spirit guides and my ancestors before leaving my home (candle stayed lit when we left). When we returned about 2 hours later the bubbles were in the water. I prayed again to thank them.
