I speak to papa legba out loud and in my head. I refresh his altar water, and I went looking for a coffee flavored cigar for pop pop but I haven't lit his candle yet. Im also going to get his rum. I have coffee grounds out. When I am ready to light him I will ask for access to work with Damballah. I can't speak for everyone but I at least try and build a relationship with a spirit before I work with them. I would be better in tuned to their energy and them with mine.
