Thanks so much for these comments. I remember asking the same question a few nights ago. Even more info for me. My mom passed away almost 20 yrs ago. Hope to make connection with her when I do this as I do not feel her presence anymore.
Ancestor veneration books you should read: 1) Ancestor paths: honoring your ancestors and guardian spirits Through prayers, rituals and offerings by Oba Ilari Aladokun 2) Finding soul on the path of Orisha by Tobe Melora Correal 3) I hear Olofi’s song by Ayoka Wiles Quinones 4) Honoring your ancestors: A guide to ancestral veneration by Mallorie Vaudoise These are just a few books that I’ve named. I hope they help.
Im new as well. You can start by saying the names of those know and unknown who are for your highest good. You can place pictures and items that they had or liked on altar with a white candle. Use incense while calling upon them for guidance. If u dont have photos use a plant with leaves to symbolize family tree. Speak to them. Leave some food and water. Continue this practice so they will show up in your dream and guide u. Hope this helps.
Your spirit guides are entities that walk with you; they don’t necessarily have to be family, most times they’re not. Your ancestors (for the most part) are people who have passed on who are related to you by blood, family. You can honor your ancestors by setting up an ancestral altar for them. It usually consists of a glass (or several glasses) of water, A white candle, pictures of your deceased relatives if you don’t have pictures of your deceased relatives you can always make a list of all your family members who have passed on (if you have their date of birth along with their date of death it would be good, but not necessary if you don’t have that information). You can make your ancestral altar as elaborate as you like or as simple as you would like it all depends on you. What you feel or better said with spirit inspires you to add to your altar. There are some very good books on ancestral veneration that you should look into reading. They will explain what ancestral altars are and give you an idea of what they represent and what should you have on your altar.
