So if we construct an alter for him we have to keep it up? Space is very limited for me so I have been doing temporary alters but dealing with the deities I want to come correct. I’ve been holding off on using my candle for this reason.

Jaylynn, if you’re just burning the candle for Legba but are not interested in forming a continual relationship with Papa Legba then an altar is not necessary to set up. Some people, for various reasons, have an affinity for this deity and want to form an ongoing connection. Do you have to form a connection? No. But, it’s a good thing if you choose to because he is the gatekeeper to the spirit world and to the crossroads. Without his approval, ain’t nothing getting done.
Ahhh. Okay so the next time I try to conjure Papa Legba I will keep his altar up. I created one for him but I put it down after I was done burning the candle because I didn’t really I had to keep it up.
An altar is something you have to keep up if you’re trying to form a relationship with a deity, your ancestors, etc. and you need a set space/place to sit and be still with your thoughts, to pray, to vent, to just be. The deities and ancestors are understanding of our plight when it concerns space to have them. Your altar can be as elaborate as you want or as simple as you want. What counts is your dedication to them.
