So I had an altar when I wasn't living with my S/O, but we moved together, so I haven't had a altar since January. Really I don't have the space and he doesn't know that I practice (please don't come with the tell him- he needs to know...) But I'm trying to figure out where and how to put one up without it being noticed. Now I have a spot for my grandmother in my kitchen with her picture and sometimes I put water, up there. But even so we had friends some over(his) and they were asking about my candles and I have a crystal tree as well. How can I make it for plain site and does an altar have to have a cloth??? Thanks for suggestions in advance.

Me personally...I think people put too much emphasis into altars...in the aesthetics of them.
An altar should consist of things that connect to you and your heart. It doesn't have to be pretty and elaborate. It just has to connect to things that matter to you, whether its an ancestor altar or for other spellwork. Spirit understands if you don't have enough space etc. Spirit also sees the work you put into thinking about and creating the altar.
What I will say is that you don't want to seem ashamed of spirit, like I've heard of people covering their altar. I don't agree with that.
Maybe start with a wall shelf...like those floating wall shelves. You can put pictures and maybe a little plant, some votive candles? And you can get an incense burner...one of the ones that stand straight up so it takes up less space. And since its a floating shelf, you can really put it anywhere, and It would look like its a part of the decor of your home.
Why she doesn't accept it all of a sudden and its been working for her all this time? And before you tell your s/o you might wanna do sweetening on him 😉
Then I really don't tell people, I guess because I'm private, the only reason my mom knows it's because she is to but now she doesn't want to accept it

If you NEVER do that's completely on you. No one pays your bills but you. But for ME personally If people can't respect my spirituality then they don't respect ME period. That's like if I believed in God and my boyfriend doesn't accept it, which has happened before im orig. Baptist and I dated a Muslim before. (He converted i didn't). And when people come over my house it's none of they business or they can stop coming. Where I pay bills at and lay my head and what I choose to do in my house is no one else's business. The point of paying rent for? But you can hide them in shoe boxes. They have a lid on it 🤷🏿♀️

The ancestor altar is easy to explain because a lot of cultures have them. Tell they nosey asses it’s in remembrance of her . They don’t need to know shit else.
