No, an altar is not necessary in order for you to burn your candle. If you are considering building an altar you need to decide what kind of altar do you want to set up, is it for your ancestors, is it for your spirit guides, is it for the saints, is it for a deity, etc. There are different kinds of altars and the set up may or may not be the same for all of them. Once you’ve decided what kind of altar you want, you can determine what you’re going to need on your altar. The basic things any altar has water, a candle and a cloth. Do your research.
